Weld Preparation

Weld Preparation & Post-Weld Cleaning Townsville

Prepare surfaces for welding and remove post-weld oxidation for stronger, cleaner joints ready for inspection or finishing.

Weld Quality Starts with Surface Quality

The quality of a weld is directly affected by the cleanliness of the surfaces being joined. Contaminants like rust, oil, paint, and mill scale can cause porosity, lack of fusion, cracking, and other defects that compromise the structural integrity of the joint.

Laser cleaning provides the most consistent pre-weld surface preparation available. The 300W pulse laser removes all surface contaminants in a single pass, leaving a clean, bare metal surface that is ready for welding. There is no risk of embedded media (as with sandblasting) or chemical residue (as with solvent cleaning).

After welding, the laser removes heat discolouration, oxide layers, and weld spatter from the heat-affected zone. This produces clean, consistent joints that are ready for visual inspection, NDT, or finishing.

Weld Cleaning Applications

  • Pre-weld joint preparation
  • Post-weld oxide removal
  • Heat-affected zone cleaning
  • Weld spatter removal
  • NDT surface preparation
  • Weld seam cleaning for inspection
  • Multi-pass weld interpass cleaning
  • Stainless steel weld cleaning
Why Laser Cleaning

The Advantage

Stronger Welds

A contamination-free surface produces welds with fewer defects, better fusion, and higher structural integrity.

Clean Inspection Surfaces

Post-weld laser cleaning produces a consistent, clean surface that is ideal for visual inspection and NDT.

No Embedded Contaminants

Unlike grinding or sandblasting, laser cleaning leaves no particles embedded in the surface that could affect weld quality.

Stainless Steel Compatible

Laser cleaning removes heat tint from stainless steel welds without affecting the corrosion-resistant passive layer.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Can laser cleaning replace grinding for weld preparation?
In many cases, yes. Laser cleaning removes contaminants without removing base material, which is an advantage over grinding for thin materials or precision work.
Does laser cleaning work on stainless steel welds?
Yes. Laser cleaning is excellent for removing heat tint and oxidation from stainless steel welds while preserving the passive layer that provides corrosion resistance.
Can you clean between weld passes?
Yes. The handheld laser head can be used for interpass cleaning on multi-pass welds, removing oxide and contamination between each pass.
